    Batterers Intervention at FVP

The Menswork program is a pre- and post- sentencing alternative for men who are abusive.

This program is also open to men who have voluntarily decided to change their violent behavior.

    What is Menswork?

Menswork offers 48-week group education classes in Kennebec and Somerset Counties for men who have verbally, mentally, or physically abused a woman in an intimate relationship. Because many men who abuse their partners also abuse their children, Menswork also address the connections between intimate partner abuse and child abuse. The goal of Menswork is to stop violence and promote individual accountability and respect. Menswork is certified by the Maine Department of Corrections.

Each weekly class costs $35.00.  Additionally, there is a $50.00 initial screening and intake fee.  All fees must be paid before class or intake.  Group members are expected to refrain from any abusive activities during the program.  Participants are also expected to actively participate in the program by attending classes, volunteering information and experience, and completing writing assignments.

    Program Objectives

    • To educate men that abuse and violence involve acts of power and control done by choice, and that they can choose not to be abusive
    • To educate men that abuse has negative effects on intimate partners, children, and on their own quality of life
    • To educate men to take responsibility for their actions while being challenged to examine their abusive behaviors and personal belief systems
    • To encourage men to develop a willingness to change their behavior and adopt practical methods to achieve this change
